Just wondering....

Yesterday I was with a friend, who also works in television, and we were discussing how assuming is the worst thing that you can do in our industry.

We came up with a line that we think is worthy of a plaque:

'Assumption is the Mother of all Fuck Ups.'

What I want to know - is this something can be applied across the career spectrum - or is it particularly relevant to our industry?

Anyone?

Ricky Gervais in "The Office" has it better - "assume makes an ass out of u and me."

Now that's a good one, I'm liking it.

Assumption's close colleague "common-sense" is often assisting the Mother of all Fuck ups. It provokes a particularly pavolvian response from me, when I'm told in a nicely patronising way that something is "just common-sense".

Muttering through gritted teeth: "neither common nor sense. usually."

On the bright side, it's an excellent basis on which to assume that the speaker has an ability to race in a common-sense way straight into fuck ups. That's my kind of assumption.

From common sense to fuck-up in under twelve seconds'. It could almost be a car ad.

It applies to my industry too which is design and print.

"You did say 100,000 copies didn't you?"

"No. It's a mass card. She didn't know that many people".

Oh man, I would be such a liability in your industry.
